And here's one of the problems with statistics, you can read them many ways. I would have thought the U14's hit ok - they were 3rd in team batting average. The pitching wasn't great, but they were also 3rd in team ERA. To me the problem wasn't getting on base, but in scoring runs, where they seemed to be significantly behind the other teams. Isnt it funny how the total runs scored column is almost the exact order that the teams finished in the tournament?Seemed reaching base was good enough, instead of trying to score and win some games. We also walked far too many hitters.

Other interesting stats are how many were struck out looking and stolen bases attempts for and against. Regardless of stats and from an spectators perspective, we made too many basic errors and this had a domino effect on the pitchers and batters. We've got some of the best pitchers in the country but they were not always supported in the field. There is no doubt that the team had the potential to win the tournament and was very well coached and trained in regards to bull pens, fielding drills, fitness and bp but what they didnt get enough of was chance to put it all together thru actual game practice, live hitting and live pitching etc at a high level. You see the same thing in State tournaments where it takes a few games for many teams to gel. Losing the first game against a team like SA did not make for the building of a great foundation and we should have thrown everything we had at them. The team looked absolutely sensational in the pre game warm up (SA looked very sloppy) and this continued into first few innings but they lost the plot after a couple of errors (and balks) - lack of experience?? We held the lead in the first half of most games but again lost the plot after an error or two and let them role over us. Why not play a few pre tournament games against the U16 Rams or a good U16 club team or...................a Rams Developement Squad like Vic White as everyone else seems to agree is a good idea

I think the Qld U-14's got stronger and stronger throughout the tournament and played their best games towards the end. To me, this suggests that the team hadn't gelled as a team before the tournament and yes Buddy, I think that they would have benefitted from some more activities before the tournament, that let them Gel as a team. Especially since there were some very close games with only a few runs in it, and these might have have been turned around with some fine tuning.
I don't think any team was about to beat Victoria, unless they put steroids in their team's water. The Vic's were just too strong and too big (literally). I mean those guys looked like amazons compared to most other teams. The overall stats show that the Vics were either on top, or at the top, of most of the columns. The Vics have raised the bar very high and if it's a global trend indicating the state of play in Victoria, they will be on top for a lot of years to come.
