I have heard from people recently who know people in the know that the points (and wins) from this first round of games for both A grade + B grade will be wiped from the slate before the second round begins.
If this is the case, can someone tell me why the B grade teams are even playing right now?
Save for the fines involved, which are payed by clubs, not players, what is the motivation for B grade players right now - they might as well just show up and cheer for A grade and hope for a piggyback into the top competition?
Seems unfair that after 8 weeks of baseball, a team like Windsor (likely 7-1 record) will be all square with the 8th place team who will probably just have a .500 record?
I see this as even more of an issue in A grade where teams like Windsor / Pine Hills / Wests have set up a 4 or 5 game cussion on the teams who will finish 7th and 8th, but get no reward for it.
The games already played will likely equate to about 25 % of all games for the season and to have these results wiped makes absolutely no sense to me.
Like I said, I have only heard this through the grapevine, so i'd love someone closer to the source to deny these facts, but this is what I have heard so far. If it is true, i'd love to know the justification from BQI's standpoint?
(I have read through all the posts on various threads and been a forum viewer for quite a while, but this issue has become too frustrating for me continue sitting back. So please don't try and argue that my comments are made without knowledge)

Good question unknown.
To carry on the points makes sense in both leagues. It's not hard to do as all teams have played each other once in both A & B Grade and points acquired in games against those teams qualifying for each league can go with them.
Not rocket science guys and this gives the B Grade some relevance during the qualifying rounds.

Unknown, this is also my understanding of what will happen.
Our B Grade team reckons that it's the longest pre-season tournament in history!! B Grade are currently playing for the Commissioner's Shield (top north v south at end of first round).

I can't see why points wouldn't carry across. If you are correct 'unknown' and points aren't carried across, I'm at a loss as to why. Seems logical...

Why would the Commissioner's Shield be top North vs top South? Surely it would just be top 2 teams since apparently it's one comp now (not a north and south split comp)?
Can someone from BQI add anything to this discussion?
Surely the Commissioner's Shield could still be played for even if the points carried through the remainder of the season?

I think the Commish shield is just whoever finishes top after the qualifying round. Which even in itself is kindof unfair given some teams have uneven byes.

Well that would be interesting to know which way it is decided. But I don't want to get too far away fom the main question here.
I have heard, as it seems have others, that the first 8 games for B grade basically count for nothing. I struggle to understand why BQI would do this?
Yes some teams have byes, and yes you don't play everyone - but that is no reason to have these games not count.
I like the idea of a split compeition after 1 full A grade round, in fact I think it's been a long time coming, but if B grade are simply going to follow their A grade teams into the relevant leagues - you must at least allow the points gained in the Qualifying Round to have some value.
Like I just said, I think the new structure involving a top tier and lower tier in A grade is very good, but to have the overall results of these games not mean more than just establishing your top 8 seems crazy. Good teams deserve to be rewarded for a strong first 2 months of the season.
I'm bringing this topic to the floor because I hear what people say about the operation of the A grade and B grade competitions, and it concerns me as someone who has played baseball in Brisbane for 18 years.

Maybe that will help me understand the situation better - I have spoken to some people around the club and I got the impression they did not understand the reasoning either. Contacting BQ asking why doesn't seem like a viable option either, as they don't have the resources to answer everyone's phone calls/emails, and I'd be surprised if they encouraged everyone who had a question regarding a decision to call them. At least posting it here will spark some discussion and they can read it when they have the time. |

Fair enough point Pope, could you direct me to the thread where this has been discussed as I have not seen that yet? Maybe that will help me understand the situation better - I have spoken to some people around the club and I got the impression they did not understand the reasoning either. I also think you'll find I was asking for clarification from people in the know so that the rumours could hopefully be put to rest. This is one of a few, all with the same constant theme A reminder to all forum members if you have any serious issues or queries to contact your Club committee first, then if required they can contact the BQ office for assistance or Regional Committee if a Region issue. ................................ Communication was sent to all clubs explaining that the Major B prelim rounds would be used as first past the post for the Commissioners Shield this season. ................................ I know you want specifics of the B grade comp, but I don't know the answer (and appears members of the forum don't either), so my thought would be to go through your club to contact BQ for the answers you seek! |

2 things here Pope.
1) If this is one of a few threads with the same theme - how come so many people around baseball are unaware of this being the situation (I know A & B grade coaches at a number of well run clubs who don't know the ruling regarding wins carrying forward)? Let alone the fact that those who do know the rule don't agree with / understand it.
2) If BQ want to provide a forum for players, coaches, clubs etc to have their say - shouldn't they be willing to provide answers through that same forum? I would imagine / hope BQ has sound reasoning behind their decisions, so why would they not be happy to discuss them on this forum?

This is 100% absolutely wrong, I actually specifically directed my question at the people who can answer this question accurately. By memory, BQ didn't start this forum..... But as it's not their message board they probably don't see the need to post to it, instead waiting for questions to come through the established channels. If BQI provide a link to a forum, and name it 'BQ FORUM', it is their message board and in my opinion that forum provides as good a channel as any to voice your questions regarding the league. All i'm asking is 'why' these games don't count moving forward through the remainder of the season? |
