1-12-1976 Athletics Vs Wilston Grange at Perry Park, Mayne.
Athletics notched their first win 0f the night series when they came back strong to defeat Wilston Grange by 10-5.
Barry Hale gave a good pitching display to restrict Wilston Grange to 7 hits. Opposing pitcher David Blakey also gave a competent performance on the mound. Athletics obtained 8 hits, but quite a few of these were extra bases. Whilst on the mound, David recieved a very severe blow to the knee from a hard drive by Chartrand. He recovered quickly and showed a lot of courage in continuing on.
Athletics were three up, three down in the first.
In Wilston Grange's first, Geoff Teale hit safely to centre, Terry Ross walked. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Brett Simpson. Teale scored on an error at third and Ross followed when Andy Tayler hit a long double to right field. Tayler then scored on Barry Clarke's hit to centre field.
Athletics opened their account in the second on Paul Chartrand's hit to the pitcher, three walks and an infield error. Intermingled with this, Blakey had struck out two batters. Athletics had scored two runs.
It was three up, three down for Wilston Grange, but they led 3-2.
Chartrand got his second hit of the game when he singled to centre, but he was the only runner on as Blakey kept firm control.
In Wilston Grange's third, Ross walked and was thrown out at second stealing. Brett Simpson hit a long double to right field, but Hale maintained control and no runs resulted.
It was three up, three down in the fourth for both teams. Wilston Grange's outs were unusual in that all three were catches to Athletic's right fielder- John Palmer.
Athletics tied the game in the fifth when Donald Howes hit a home run over centre field to make the score 3-3. Randy Story walked and was then hit home on a centre field home run by Bob Nilsson.
Despite two infield errors, Wilston Grange were kept scoreless in their half of the fifth and Athletics led 5-3.
Athletics sealed the game in the sixth when John Palmer opened the inning with a home run over left field. Barry Hale doubled to centre, Randy Story walked and all three came home on Vic Tollenarer's home run over left field. Chartrand was on after being hit by a pitched ball and scored on Peter Murphy's double to left field. Athletics had scored five big runs.
Wilston Grange struck back in their half of the sixth when Tayler, Clarke and Teale all gave hits, which with a couple of errors gained them two runs.Tehy had bases loaded when their last out was forced at third base.
