Everything is just jammed into so little time. If you want people to give up there time to support a national team your going to have to cut back on the amount of time people spend at their own games. Perhaps that means only playing having one senior game a weekend that way people have time to do other things besides baseball freeing up for time for you to go and watch a game. Maybe consider switching the Friday night game back to a Tuesday or Wednesday night game like had been done in the past, that way you can eliminate double headers and cramming it all into one weekend.

I have done a little research and the rams this year have used 31 different players so far. Granted they are really struggling to win but obviously they are trying different things but out of the 31 I'm sure a lot of those guys are non professional club players. With the National league starting next year I would hope that the team would boost their roster with however many imports they feel they need to be competitive. Good point about all of the young pros not quite up to it at the moment and I agree but I'm sure they have been signed for a reason and will be a lot more competitive as every year passes.

Ride The Pine, very interesting post however I think there are to many people with way to much personal interest on this forum with Queensland Rams to really add to your thoughts.

Confusing david. A personal interest such as that we are all part of the Queensland baseball community and would all like to see the Rams succeed? What do you mean?

A few points.
1. To have any chance of drawing crowds the rams or whatever they're called need to improve their onfield performance dramatically. No one will continue to watch what has happened this season.
2. Parents may not want to bring the young kids out late on a Friday night before their early junior games on Saturday. Maybe promote Saturday night's game as kids night.
3. Holloway field just isn't comfortable enough for fans to sit and watch for an extended period of time. Maybe sell cheap cushions to sit on the concrete.
4. Fans may be okay with paying an entrance fee but overcharging for food and drink is just being too greedy. We are trying to attract a lot of grassroots people are we not.
5. Do more to educate non baseball people who turn up about the rules etc. Maybe some sort of brochure or program to explain some baseball rules and tactics.

Hey George, a couple of good ideas, way to think outside the box. I especially like the friday night idea, no way am I coming to the game Friday PM when I have to be up by 6 to get to my kids games. Promoting Saturday night as a kids night is a stroke of genius ... cudos to you.
Holloway isn't all that comfortable but I'm not sure if there is anywhere else with such a big grandstand. The rain came through the shade cloth last Saturday night and this could do with some improvement.
Keep the ideas coming!!!

I don't know how Midweek games could work Snooch, each of the 6 X ABL teams next season will still have local clubbies on their Rosters with day jobs, the transport logistics would not be viable and too expensive. Home and away games will have to be based on consecutive 2-3 day visits.

How many players from the ABL clubs actually played club ball? There wouldn't of been many, so you weren't playing against these guys every weekend. You would head to Palm Meadows to see Rip pitch because that is the only place you could see it. Or you would go to the RNA to see R.J take BP before the game. You can't compare today with what happened during the ABL years, or even before that when the Claxton shield was on. We have a lot more players who are pro, the clubs won't allow them to play or have restrictions on them. These are the guys you want to watch play at the top level. Moylan, Blackley, Rowland Smith, Moss, Balfour, Oltjen, Stockman, Oxspring. Big league players, thats who people want to pay to see play but they are unavailable. You would go to the ball park to see Meagher Vs Lloyd. Now you have Johnny can't get anyone out in A Grade pitching against Johnny i'll go on the road trip seeing nobody else can get off work.

It'll change though. Once the ABL is in full swing, you'll find less and less of the better players playing club ball. At the moment it's a non-professional competition where players put their work on hold to go please crowds of 400.
How often does Naughton, Naylor and Searle play club ball? Once the ABL starts, I'm sure more of these type of guys will be playing and guys like Erasmus and Albury will be more dedicated to the ABL then their clubs.
Rome wasn't built in a day.

Seems to me there are two separate lines of discussion happening on this thread. One is all about who should or should not be in the team, and I'm not getting into that. The other line is all about what can be done to bring in bigger crowds. Here are a few points that hopefully might spark some useful lines of discussion. . I concur with you 100% Wilderness. They should have a look at the way they run minor league games in the US, they are a real family/community event and cater accordingly to everyone with entertainment etc. My kids and their friends just want to meet the players but they reckon, except for a couple of players (who have now achieved legend status), they just ignore them when they hang around the dug out and bull pen or walk past. I know they are focussed on the game but these kids are the future and if they want to come watch them play, mum and dad will come as well and buy the t-shirt.

Thats how it used to be and Friday and Saturday nights were for the ABL and the games weren't conflictiing with any senior competitions.

WHY doesn't the Brisbane A grade play at the same time as the Rams? Is it because Baseball Qld want the club players to attend games? That's not happening. Is it so that Claxton players are available for club games? Why?
The Queensland State league doesn't stop every time the Broncos play. They sometimes play on the same day.
Claxton Shield and Brisbane Major League/Pacific League are two separate leagues, competing for players and crowds. Deal with it. Keep the Brisbane League schedule as it has been and if it conflicts with the ABL, then the better presented option will win the crowd.

I'm taking a punt and I would guess you aren't a Rugby League player yet you would still turn upto a Broncos game. The majority of Bronco supporters are not Rugby League players so the issue with baseball and league are two different things entirely. QLD Rugby League is mainly played on Saturday afternoon and juniors in the mornings and while there would be some conflict with games, it definitley isn't a Major issue as we are not talking about every team playing at the same time the Broncs play. The current market for baseball is baseball players, so to have ABL and seniors at the same time is suicide. Consider seniors don't actually get a crowd and the majority of an ABL crowd would be Senior players who bring their kids. A-League had the same problem with the Roar playing at the same time as the local comp. Seems they still have a problem though. My own thoughts are why put an already struggling sport in competition with itself.

Baseball at the moment has only a majority or baseballers watchin and we would be lucky to have 5000 or so followers of the game here in south east queensland. With most having commitments on a friday night as people tend to go and watch their family play in their local competition. And im not about to give up my time to go and watch my state team play when i have my own commitments on the friday night possibly saturday morning and then sunday again. You are never going to be able to run the ABL successfully while the local leagues conflicts with it.
