Example: High pop up hit to infield between 3rd and short , both camp underneath and then watch each other as the ball hits the ground, same with 2nd and right field. 2nd camps underneath then right says mine but stops 2 steps short and watches it drop .. Both simple plays, but both scored as hits....?

Which Fielder does the Error go to in both cases?? F5 or F6 ? F4 or F9 ?

Wouldn.t this be called a muffed fly to whichever fielder should have caught the ball. It has to be an error on someone, a pop up to the infield cant be a base hit.

A muffed fly is a ball that a fielder can catch with normal effort, but for whatever reason bangs off his glove. If he completely misses it is a hit. If he completely misses it, it is a hit? I dont know what the score book says but it isn't a hit. What about on a ground ball under the glove, this is an error but the fielder doesnt touch it. If a fielder can catch the ball with normal effort and doesn't, then it should be called an error. Rule c.s. (common sense)

Would it be a case of scorer discretion. Say for example any routine play missed in A grade is an error and B and C not treated as harshly( things like super high pop ups and drilled line drives will be missed by lower grades but in A they shouldn,t be). In the first play quoted above the sstop should be given the error as he controls the infield.

In 2007 Prince Fielder hit an inside-the-park homerun at the Metrodome on a routine pop-fly to centre. The centre fielder lost it under the roof, it dropped maybe 5 metres from him and by the time he got the ball in Fielder had scored. No error on the play sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=270617109

If a fielder can catch the ball with normal effort it would be ruled an error, but in the case of losing the ball in the sun or in the roof at an indoor field this would be ruled a hit. I think the key here is "with normal effort." Outside influences like the sun, indoor roof, or even wind would change normal effort.

I'd like to see some of the experienced scorers that read the forum comment on this. But ABF and MLB Rule 10.12 (a) clearly States that "mental mistakes" shall not be scored an Error. I wont bore you with copy+paste, but here is the Link to read. mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/official_scorer_10.jspI do not believe the OP by 17 can be called Errors by rule 10.12, should they be Hits?? I'd say morally not Hits, but it must be called something in the scorebook??

Outside influences like the sun, indoor roof, or even wind would change normal effort. So if a fan yells out 'DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARYL' right before he catches it and he gets psyched out, would you call that a hit?
