The right calf injury suffered by Los Angeles Dodgers star Manny Ramirez could put the chances of his team in jeopardy in the ongoing Major League Baseball season.
With the injury, the Dodgers management already placed Ramirex on a 15-day disabled list.
Dodgers manager Joe Torre revealed they decided to place Ramirez on injured list as a form of precaution to protect the health of their top player so that he can return early and help their team this MLB season.
To fill Ramirez's roster spot, the club recalled outfielder Xavier Paul from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Paul was expected to arrive in Washington, where the Dodgers were beginning a three-game series with the Nationals, sometime on Friday evening.
Torre hoped that the injury of their star player will heal early so that he can immediately return and help the cause of their team in the current MLB season.
If everything goes well with the injury of Ramirez could return on May 8 when the Dodgers host Colorado in the penultimate game of their upcoming, 10-game home-stand.
Before his injury, Ramirez had a great start in the current MLB season hitting .415 with four doubles, two homers, 12 RBI and a .500 on-base percentage.
But Paul, who also was called up when Ramirez was suspended for 50 games last May for violating baseball's drug policy, also started off hot at Albuquerque, where he was hitting .361 with a .409 on-base percentage.
It's the fourth time in his 18-year career that Ramirez has been placed on the DL, and the first time since 2002, when he fractured his left index finger while playing for Boston.
Despite the injury suffered by their top player, Torre assured fans that the Dodgers will compete hard this MLB season.
