The Heat is on in Brisbane
by Michael O’Donnell
The Queensland Rams play their first home 2010 Claxton Shield series this weekend when they clash with the champions Perth Heat at Holloway field Newmarket.
The heat will be on the home side as they try to snap a five game losing sequence which currently has the sunshine state team in last position on the competition table with a 1-5 record.
Good news for the Rams during the week when their stocks were boosted with the injection of six frontline players to face the might of the heat. The experienced new players will need to have an immediate impact if the team is to climb up the Claxton shield competition ladder.
Brad and Wade Dutton, Joel Naughton and Andrew Utting will add batting depth to the roster to support Aven Fletcher who heads the Rams stats batting .304 . Fletcher has received support from Alan Schoenberger .273 and Trent Baker .250. However Queensland will need to swing the bat consistently hard to post a competitive scores against the Heat. Pitcher Simon Morris again should lead off for the Rams in the opening match on Friday night while manager David Nilsson with wrestle between James Albury, Chris Lamb or alternatives from his bullpen to start Saturdays double header matches.
The Perth Heat who are determined to claim the title of Australia’s Baseball champion team for three consecutive years currently have a 3-3 record after a close home series win against New South Wales 2-1 last weekend. The champions have Mitchell Graham, Timothy Kennelly and Nick Kimpton all batting above .300. However Perth have struggled in the field to keep their opponents to a moderate score line. Chucker Daniel Schmidt on the mound has been their best performer with an era of 2.13 while the other starting pitchers have not gone on with the job. Perth Manager Don Kyle before settling on his rotation will cast a good eye over the Rams revised roster knowing the hitting strength of the new additions.
