Game Story
David Ireland, Friday, 6 November 2009
On a wet Friday night at Blacktown Olympic Park the Rams prevailed over New South Wales in the Claxton Shield season opener. Timely hitting combined with solid pitching from Simon Morriss (Runcorn), Justin Erasmus (Runcorn), and Matt Timms (All-Stars) contributed to the total team victory. Offensively, cleanup hitter and short stop Alan Schoenberger (Pine Hills) caused the most damage with four hits, two doubles, and one RBI. A valuable win on the road, team manager David Nilsson was proud of the team's ability to hang in there and nail down the victory after a long day of travel. Morriss gave the Rams a quality start and surrendered only two runs over six innings, striking out six, and walking two. Erasmus took over in the seventh and eighth and got the win after the Rams took the lead in the top of the ninth. In the ninth Schoenberger ignited the rally with a lead off double to right field. He then advanced to third on a single by designated hitter, Aven Fletcher (Windsor), and was plated when pinch hitter Carlos Prichard (Redcliffe) reached on an error immediately following. In the bottom half of the inning, with one last shot for the Patriots, they couldn't muster a rally against shut down closer Matt Timms, who pitched a scoreless inning recording two strikeouts and registered the save. After the game NIlsson emphasized the total team effort mentioning that it was contributions from guys like Andrew Campbell (Ipswich) that will determine the success of the team. Campbell was a last minute roster addition and stepped up and played sparkling defense at second base.
