Ok posters, I am listening. As President of the QBUA, I am open to suggestions and can put good and achievable ideas into our meeting agenda, this is not to say that all ideas may be adopted or supported. We have club's with good, average and not so average umpires, what can the clubs do? Remembering that, the ABF instructors and the more experienced umpires in our comp can help, but we can not stand beside them all the time.

Is it possible to have 1 umpire at 6 games, rather than 2 umpires at 3 games?
Perhaps having these club guys actually working with umpires in real situations will allow them to get better and even perform more professionally (as a lack professionalism was mentioned earlier)? As with most situations (in my opinion) you normally gain more out of real life experience than anything else.
I know it's a constant battle to get / keep umpires so perhaps having them work together is the only way we keep them long term - and I can uderstand this point too.
Just a start, i'm sure others will have thoughts too.

I agree 100% with "Unknown" I'm very impressed with the new Ump accreditation system, in fact I believe ALL Major A players should do the Level "0" course. As a long time player and having umped low level seniors as far back as 20 years ago, I found the Level "0" Ump accreditation course a great source of knowledge. I'd like to see 1 "experienced" Blue + 1 "experienced" Gold level 1 Ump at every majors and pacific A/B game. LV1 Golds Home Plate the B's and Blues Home Plate the A's... learn on the job.

Ryn, I dont think I said anything about bad umpiring. I mentioned that at some time every team feels like the hometown umpires are being biased. The League and clubs need to address this problem before any more games get out of control. The responsibility is still on the clubs to have competent umpires. My apologies, I thought your first sentence referring to what happened Saturday night, was regarding the level of umpiring.

Thanks for your response so quickly. My question is how can the CLUBS help their umpires.I have to go and can not respond if full, sorry for that. I'm not exactly sure they can. Some clubs are stretched in terms of resources and volunteers, so only a handful of people can umpire. If they aren't very good at it, there's nothing that can be done. Whereas a club with an abundance of umpires can simply use the better ones more often. I think the umpires association running the L1 and L0 courses around the clubs is awesome (as a player, enjoyed the level 0 a lot). And the neccessity to have qualified officials in place is also a step in the right direction. I'm not sure there's much more that can be done. The only thing I can think of is attempt to lure more players/club members/parents into umpiring games through payment. The more people you have to choose from, the higher the probability that you will train quality umpires for use. Naturally clubs don't have the cash to burn, so it would have to get creative in generating those additional funds. Maybe approach a sponsor to fund it, and sport the company logo on the back of the green/yellow shirt?

Introduce an umpire levy and pay club umpires You could do that, but people are already whining about the cost of fees.

Really Ryn? I consider it more as an incentive to earn your fee's back. If you umpire an U14 plate every week, you've earned your senior fee's back on top of a little bit of pocket money.
$30 extra per person for the guarantee of willing volunteers isn't too much of a price to pay surely?

I'd be happy to pay it, absolutely. But I'm not whining about fees.
