In a few of the post recently it has been said about growing/developing the grass roots level of baseball. Gareth, SW and KJ are doing a great job in getting more juniors involved (batter up etc) and developing them (bricks, coaching accreditations etc) surely, others out there have ideas on other ways to attract and retain new ball players (in both juniors and seniors).
So my question is, how do we increase our numbers and then keep them once they start to play.......

School based competition. In primary schools especially. I remember my mum getting baseball as a school sport for the first time when I was in primary school (still is going) and that year we got about 5 extra junior teams.
Perhaps to a lesser extent a better Metropolitan or co-curricular high school based competition, because at the moment, the only high school baseball teams in south-east Queensland are Kenmore, Redlands, Grace Lutheran, Bray Park, Wavell, Corinda, Redbank and Alex Hills.

Agree JRA, More school based comps would be a start. Where is the National ABF Marketing Plan. BQ does great with "batter up" etc. BUT where is the national ABF marketing plan for the mainstream Media ? The websites and internet forums are great, but really just preaching to the converted. How do we preach baseball to the un-converted in Australia?

ramsfan44 is right. We need to get mainstream media on side. We currently have the Claxton Shield on and there is no coverage by any forms of the media. The results on the TV news would certainly start to boost our following. Even the results in the newspaper would be a start. On the Gold Coast we are lucky to get one column in the results page (1 inch x 1 inch) giving the junior results in Mondays paper. No write ups, no pics etc. If we could get a page with some pics in the sports sections on a regular basis, it would certainly go a long way

Totally agree with Ramsfan44 on the ABF media campaign. I know media costs a lot but the right type of ads on tv will help numbers. If the ABL comes back and gets coverage on one of the big 3 networks HD channels. ( Frosty said MLB will be on free to air HD next year) You will get kids watching MLB from april to oct then hopefully the ad campign for ABLwill start and soon after the new leaguge will start and numbers will skyrocket. As soon as this new league is confirmed clubs need to put plans in place to cope with the numbers. Hell maybe i will be able to quit my job and just run my school(BMPS). Also Don't forget Robina high has a dedicated baseball program. Oughie is doing a great job, well respected by the boys..

www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,24566281-7642,00.html Quick search brings up only this article, I hope it's true! pope, results are put in the Courier and Sunday Mail weekly and 7 News always has the GBL results on a ticker at the bottom. Quest Newspapers are good enough to put weekly articles about games in as well, but you're right, the Gold Coast has very little baseball coverage for such a key area of baseball in Queensland.

Why not try and get the local district papers on side? Might mean a little bit of money, but I think if all the clubs paid for there own it might generate more interest and higher sign ons

It doesn't cost a cent and the paper fills up its sports pages. So all budding club journos get writing. Tell the public about your club, teams, successes and sign ons. You could even pick up experienced players and coaches that didn't know about baseball in the area. START NOW!!!! Get the interest churning in your area.

Homer is spot on that Quest News is the way to go. Get an interesting story in about a club signed or Rep player at your club or other interesting story with a pic, especially during the week or just after BQ run the Batterup program in your club area. And like Homer said, start now if you can.
I maintain at the top end, more public media marketing is required also to back up the grass roots Club marketing. That might be happening soon. I have heard from a VERY reliable 2nd source ( The 1st Works for the ABF) that the new National ABL is beginning to hire staff......... yes yes.. I know we have heard these rumours about the new ABL for many years. Probably it will still be 10/11 season the ABL cogs are finally in place. Hopefully ABF will make grand announcement and all Clubs at grassroots can get some recruitment mileage from it before this season sign-ons. MLB currently on Chanel ONE is great and ABF have done a super effort marketing that on the website.. Baseball needs to be in Public media more however. The new ABL should help grassroots sign-ons.
