This posting is by myself (RICHO) on a personal level and should not be associated with my umpiring involvement in the forums or in the baseball community.
I am surprised, maybe naively, that there is not much of an interest in the forum concerning the 2008 QLD LITTLE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS just held at Beenleigh.
It maybe due to everyone having their own self interest, so many posting about who is the best batters or best pitchers in the League or who is doing what, where.
So many posting and opinions about how to develop baseball in Queensland, the clubs and Australia, usually talking about seniors and why is such and such in a team and not another.
So many postings and comments on the forum and in the baseball community about how to make baseball better and strong leagues and better development of juniors.
Yet, these are the kids that will be, if not already, starting their development and will be noticed in the future.
Before the championships, all the kids involved and the coaching staff, had a chance to go to the 2008 Australian Little league Championships to play off against other regional teams from around Australia.
If they won the National Championships, then they would represent Australia and play off against teams from all over Asia to see who would go to the USA for the Little League World Championships.
Now we know that the METRO TEAM won the Championship and are going to Surface Paradise for the National Championships.
I'd like to say WELL DONE to all the kids, coaches, EO's and scorers and others involved with all the teams.
Some of the teams could not train together for weeks before the Championships, due to their fields being covered in water from weeks of rain.
I did not see the whole Championship, but while I was there, I enjoyed 99.9% of it.
Maybe, with my umpiring duties, I had the best seat in the house, as we are the closest people to the kids and hear them run their games.
They encourage each other, they give commands to fielders before the plays, their alert and know what is going on with a split second to recognize plays, either in defense or offense.
Then you hear them as kids, what they say to each other, it could be the weirdest thing in the world, but they understand each other, it's kids language.
They may make an error or make the wrong decision.
30 seconds later they crack a joke, and the whole team is laughing their heads off.
Maybe something we forget about as we get older.
The quality of the ball was great, yes there were some scores that blew out and some teams are better than others, but they never stop trying.
Each play is in itself a moment in time, it happens and it's history.
They try as hard as they can on the next play, and try and try again.
I remember one player, who probably knew that his team did not have much of a chance in winning the Championship, and no one of any great interest would be looking at him, but he tried his hardest. He was a catcher, and he must have run back to the back net 20-30 times in the game, his pitchers were tired and could not make it easy for him, he was tired, and tried his hardest.
Every time, he would run back and get the ball, and try and get the runner from 3rd, once I seen a tear in his eye, but he never stopped trying and never stopped running for the ball.
Next dig, he would have a smile on his face, maybe for blocking a ball and no runners advancing, or maybe just that he did not have to see the back net again, only he will know.
There were others on other teams that gave the same commitment.
I must say also, that the kids that are improving their baseball skills all the time and are stand outs in their own teams, also showed commitment and enthusiasm. There were some great plays, catches and hits, I hope they were caught on a spectators camera.
In say this, there were also games where both teams were matched off again each other, and all the way through the games, the play and score had everyone on the edge of their seats, the result never a foregone conclusion.
Well done to the Beenleigh organization, for their commitment and efforts in having to run all the games on the one diamond.
