I think a lot of the clubs need to look in their own backyard on umpiring before pointing fingers. i am sure most clubs try and put out the best they can find ( as most club executives know not many people say i'll do it) but most of the time its the same people. i have played senior baseball for around 23 years mostly a-grade majors and i have seen this across the whole competition and most clubs that use their own umpires becuase the lack of official ones. umpires are voluntary and a thankless job. where do you stop. we are losing too many volunteers now which puts more strain on executives of clubs (but some players out their wouldnt know what that was until they tried it) as i said VOLUNTEERS not paid to do it....

Posters, I think we are losing the point here, maybe I did not ask the right question.

There has been alot of talk lately with umpires from many clubs having, or not having a few problems, or the quality is not quite there.
You can pay a person a $1000 to do a game, but is the quality or understanding of the umpiring mechanics and fundimentals there?
We, the QBUA umpires and other umpires coordinated by us, do not change any payment for doing any Junior games, including club, interclub tournaments, regional, Junior Finals, All Star games, state championships or nationals. We do this to limit the cost to parents and players.
Before anyone gets excited, I'm not to sure which teams are charged a levi for officials and other cost, but we don't get paid a rate for the game.
We go out there, if available, so the teams can have the best or close to best umpiring available.

Can we think of other things instead of money please.
Think of something like support and engagement.

Thanks

I'm just not sure there are other ways. I think a lot of people just don't like umpiring, or are worried about being wrong on calls and hearing about it (though we have made large strides in addressing umpire abuse - I think, you may be a better judge). The incentive has to be there for them to want to do it, and I don't think currently there's anything else to offer. You can support and engage potential umpires all you like, but if they still don't want to be there because they have better things to do, there's not a lot that can be done.

I'm not saying that paying umpires will make them better at officiating a game, because it won't. What I'm saying, is that in each club, there are probably people who could do a better job that don't see the incentive to step in and spend their time. I would do it for free to help my club right now (and I do), but a lot of people don't see it that way, unfortunately.

Bronco. In relation to part of your poosting: "One rangers player "checked swing" with 2 strikes was so obvious that he started walking yet both umpires called no swing and he had to return to the batters box." 1. The base umpire was out-of-position by standing at position 2. I.E. He did NOT have the FULL and CORRECT view as to whether the batter had "check-swinged". Because of this, the base umpire gave benefit of the doubt to the batter and called a BALL, as he should have.

To ALL people who have complained, whinged and moaned about the Rangers-Padres game, I say GROW-UP and look at yourselves.

If it wasn't for the VOLUNTEERS, there would be NO GAME. Let's pull together and grow the game for our kids. It's not a good example when players swear and curse over a GAME. Grow up!

Yes, the all club's rely on volunteers, and everyone should remember that a sporting event is not a place to open up freely on anyone they wish too.

Musicman........In the 2 umpire system, and with runners on base, if the umpire is in their B or C position, (infield), they are NOT out of position, I'm not sure where you think they should be.

This next part is nothing to do with any situation or play in any game this year, no matter which park..........................
................Now, a little reminder about the Rules and the interpretation on a check swing. Each umpire, no matter where they are on the field, makes their mind up on every swing the batter makes. On a check swing, the only thing the any umpire has to consider is, DID THE UMPIRE THINK THAT THE BATTER SWUNG AT THE PITCH. Their is no reference to (benefit of doubt to anyone). The batter swung or did not swing.
There is no measurements, points of reference, to look at.
In the situation where a batter may walk, the batter and everyone else who thinks they swung, only because they read the check swing motion incorrect, would think the umpire was wrong, but why should you strike the guy out if you think he really did not swing and they are unaware of check swing interpretations.

Something out of left field, if the batter has 3 balls, and on the next pitch, they start walking to first base, obviously telling everyone that they think the pitch was a ball, and the umpire calls a strike, is the umpire wrong.

This thread has served it's purpose and now Locked.
This thread was for results ending 25th OCT.

By all means continue the disputing of Umpire calls discussion in a new thread in the Umpire ( Blues Brothers and Sisters ) section as it is a very worthwhile topic for more input.
